While we are grateful for the opportunity to highlight the contributions of amazing African-American visual artists, resources and tips throughout the year, February is one of favorite months. We begin our celebration of Black History Month 2017 by offering two new art products.

Also in time for the for the Super Bowl, our latest art lesson is inspired by the fun story, Don't Throw it To Mo! written by David Adler and illustrated by Sam Ricks. The main character is a determined young athlete who saves the day for his team. Young artists will learn about multi-media art compositions by completing this art lesson.

We also created a new word search activity featuring some of the most prominent African-American visual artists of the 20th century. You can download the resource  for free by clicking on the link below.

We love to use great children's books in the art room to foster creativity. Two of our latest art resources are inspired by two amazing children's books. The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth written by Margaret Musgrove and illustrated by Julia Cairns, is a wonderful story about the origins of kente cloth. After reading the story to your young artists, they will enjoy creating our 3D Spider's Colorful Web Art Lesson.

Red Yellow Blue & A Dash of White Too!
is a colorful story written and illustrated by C.G. Esperanza. This story is a great way to introduce young artists to the color wheel. They will further develop an understanding of texture by creating our Colorful Batik Elephant Art Lesson. What are some of your favorite children's books to use as inspiration for art lessons?

Happy New Year! We are excited about 2016 and the commemoration of Dr. King's birthday coming up in a few days. Last year we were privileged to visit the powerful memorial of Dr. King in our nations capitol which inspired this post. While there are many fantastic paintings of Dr. King, we have listed three of our favorite paintings of Dr. King that can be used as a source of inspiration for lessons in the art room. (The three paintings below are protected by copyright law and are only displayed for educational purposes. Click on each portrait to learn more about the artist who painted each portrait.)

Picture
This complementary colored portrait of Dr. King by artist, Mike Roos, reminds us that a complementary color palette can be used to create an interesting piece.
Picture
Talented artist, Fitzcarmel LaMarre created this beautiful portrait of Dr. King. A lesson that uses graphite pencils, conte crayons or charcoal to shade a close-up of this great icon would develop drawing skills.
Picture
Painted by artist Andrea Btoy, this portrait displays white typography around the face. Young artists can create a watercolor resist portrait in which the white letters can be written with white crayons or oil pastel.s and painted over with the paint.

Spring is almost here and we are excited. Here are some examples of bulletin board ideas using some our latest products.
The first bulletin board idea features our colorful Elements of Design Bulletin Board Trim.  Inspired by our popular Elements of Design Poster, this trim reminds students of the basic elements of design. Create a display that features a work of art and pose the question below to young art students. The painting featured below is entitled, The Arch, by Henry O. Tanner. Have each student to write their answers on a sticky note and post it on the board around the featured painting.
Picture
The second bulletin board display exhibits our new Spring Into Art Banner. This display is also framed by our Colorful Pencil Bulletin Board Trim and features student artwork. This floral art lesson can be found in Great Art Lessons for the Creative Soul.

3 Ways Art from the Past Reflects Modern Society

1/12/2015

Picture
This past weekend, we were privileged to see the powerful movie Selma directed by Ava Duvernay and starring David Oyewolo as Dr. Martin Luther King. While watching the movie, I was reminded of this powerful image by prominent artist Jacob Lawrence. It is a depiction of the actual horrific experience in which peaceful demonstrators were met with the cruel hatred of racist individuals while trying to cross the Edmund Petis bridge in Selma,  Alabama in the year of 1965. Here is a list of three simple reasons why art from past generations tends to reflect current issues in modern culture.

1. History Repeats Itself
One of the most amazing aspects from the film Selma is that many of the racial issues that our country faced over 40 years ago is happening today.

2. Artistic Expression is Timeless
While in certain areas, we continue to evolve in others we stay the same. The arts express the core of our humanity which struggles to evolve.

3. Art is Inspirational
Many artists from the past wanted to remind society of the worst of ourselves by creating dark images that reflected human behavior. They wanted to inspire us to develop into better versions of ourselves.

We hope that you have the opportunity to see this amazing film and use the image by Jacob Lawrence to discuss how it relates to our present situation in the United States with your students or child. Also in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King day, make sure to download our free coloring sheet featuring Dr. King.

A wonderful way to highlight African-American artists in your classroom is to engage students in a fun yet informative activity. Our new resource entitled "Great African-American Artists Memory Game"  will allow students to learn important facts about prominent African-American artists while having fun. The set includes 26 different artists from around the United States who played a major role in the development of visual arts during the 20th century. Much like the old game Concentration, players take turns turning over the cards in order to find matching pairs. While there are three different ways to play the game, teachers can also use the cards as inspiration for a variety of art history lessons. Click on the art resource lessons to find more creative lesson ideas for the month of February. How are you celebrating the accomplishments of great African-Americans in your classroom?
